Brilliant show at the Palace!

Occasionally I get to a gig, not expecting a hellava lot and come away with a drastically different opinion of what I came with. This was one of those shows....It started out with Satya. A young female artist from Oakland who I've known about for a year+, simply because I know her manager, Phil Green. And I feel like he has a good sense of what's good in the way of new music, as my first introduction to Phil was through his association with Fantastic Negrito in the very early days of Negritos' career.

Satya opened the show on this evening at The Palace of Fine Arts. She had two other women with her onstage, one provided backing vocals and the other on keys. Both are artists on their own. Satya entered the stage, placed in between the two women, and as soon as she opened her mouth to begin her first tune, I got goosebumps as the sound of her voice was extraordinary in a very good way! Like it could melt butter. The tone that came out was gorgeous and pure like beautiful clear crystals. The sound was stunning. For Satyas' whole set, you could hear a pin drop in the venue. She was poised, and beautiful.

She talked to the audience and connected well. If I had to compare her to other more well known artists it would be Sade with a sprinkling of Kate Bush and Corrinne Bailey Rae. Absolutley wonderful! I hope to be seeing a lot more of Satya in the near future! Then came a true force of nature from Tarzana California (as she announced numerous times that night)....Ms. Macy Gray!

She began her set at about ten minutes past nine with a four piece band behind her. She was energetic and lively with that sultry beautiful voice and an absolutley huge positive vibe woven throughout the entire show. Ms Gray seemed to illuminate that vibe from ever pore in her body! About 30 minutes into the show, she left the stage and re-entered five minutes later with a clothing change. She re-entered in a stunning long black gown and she looked amazing. Through the show she had two more costume changes which were seamless.

As far as connection to her audience goes...It felt as the entire audience knew every word to each and every song she sang. At one point towards the end, everyone held up the phones with lights and sang with her. Many were up on their feet dancing through the entire concert. A few audience members were even invited onstage for hugs. She was superb! Her look(s), her performance, and her dynamic connection to her audience was a ten out of ten! She exuded the positivity of Michael Franti, and I came away with the same optimism and 'good energy' as I do at his shows. I'd see Macy Gray again anytime! If you get a chance to see this show with Macy Gray and Satya, I'd highly reccomend both artists. You will not be disappointed experiencing the music of either one, for sure! Two thumbs up for the great pairing of these very talented artists!
