Acclaimed Guitarist Deploys Soaring Six-String Melodies to Help Feed People in Need During the Holidays
By Michael Molenda
World-renowned guitarist Johnny A. kicks off the season of giving by releasing an instrumental version of the Beatles’ 1965 song from the Help soundtrack, “You’ve Got to Hide Your Love Away,” and donating profits from its sales to the Greater Boston Food Bank.
But there’s yet another gift for music fans.
On “You’ve Got to Hide Your Love Away,” Johnny A. not only celebrates John Lennon and the Beatles, but he also interprets the song in a style inspired by one of his guitar heroes—Jeff Beck.
“The passing of Jeff hit me hard, and it reminded me of when John Lennon passed—which was equally as devastating, says A. “It made me reflect and reaffirm how significant those two artists were in shaping my own musical path. I felt compelled to record and release something that, in my own little way, honored and thanked them for the lifelong inspiration they had gifted me.”
Produced by Johnny A. for Aglaophone Records, “You’ve Got to Hide Your Love Away” features A. on all guitars, Dean Cassell on bass, Steve Hunt on keyboards, and Marty Richards on drums and percussion.
You can buy or stream this amazing musical work from TuneCore and help support the Greater Boston Food Bank in their mission to end hunger this holiday season.
Johnny A. revitalized instrumental guitar music with his stunning 1999 release, Sometime Tuesday Morning, and he hasn’t stopped innovating and blowing minds since. His one-man looping show, Just Me & My Guitars, is a multimedia extravaganza that takes audiences on a musical journey through his most-treasured songs and favorite artists. From A. To Beatles showcases his melodic guitar interpretations of the legendary band’s smash hits and deep tracks. Beck-Ola celebrates the music of Jeff Beck, but as translated through A.’s own style and approach.
Johnny A. may also be one of the busiest guitarists on the planet, as throughout all the above, he has also managed to score a Grammy nomination; become inducted into the Boston Music Hall of Fame; help design signature guitars for Fender Custom, Gibson Custom, and Epiphone; and perform, record, or tour with the Yardbirds, Peter Wolf, B.B. King, Jeff Beck, Buddy Guy, Steve Vai, Joe Bonamassa, Peter Frampton, Steve Miller, Les Paul, and many more.
“You never can tell where a path will lead,” says A. “I just keep on going, and hope it takes me to more fantastic places. What's that old saying? ‘It's not the destination, it's the journey.’”
